Our physical money is held and managed within a financial institution, most commonly a bank. However, what if we applied this concept to our energy? We all have varying capacities for what our physical, mental, and emotional states can take on at any given time. There is no way we can be firing on all cylinders 24/7; therefore, we have to manage the flow and retention of our energy.
One of the tools that we have to help us manage our energy is our boundaries. Boundaries often get a bad rap, but I think of them like the bumper guards at the bowling alley. There are times in our lives when we need those bumper guards and times when we don’t. Knowing when to raise them and lower them is the key.
I often ask individuals who are stressed or reaching burnout: “Where are you spending your energy, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally?” What is serving you by helping replenish that energy, and what is not serving you by draining you? Think of it again in terms of your finances and managing a budget. It’s always good to check in and understand where money is flowing and to make any necessary adjustments or pivots.
The same is true with our energy and boundaries. This can change day to day, month to month, or even season to season. The important factor is to meet yourself where you are in that moment. Extend yourself kindness and grace. Know where your energy bank is, know what boundaries you need to put in place, and be intentional with how you manage and replenish your energy.
People who get shit done consistently have practiced managing their energy bank. They are comfortable with setting boundaries – and doing so unapologetically. They let go of what does not serve them. They attract and gather what they need, when they need it. They understand there are times for replenishment. Practicing all these things brings about an abundance to life that allows us to get more shit done.
