Dreaming Big

Being Imaginative this Summer

Hi, GSD Factor friends!  R.C. Farrish here!  I’m excited to be writing to you again.  For today’s topic I’m going to talk about being imaginative and how I’ve been activating and practicing that GSD Factor attribute this summer.

During the summer break from school I go to a number of different camps.  I like the variety and how I get to learn new things with each one and meet new friends.  Here are the 3 camps where I really used being imaginative and how I applied it:

1. Art Camp – We were working on a 3D sculptor project that we had to design from scratch and then figure out how to build out the scenery and characters.  Our teacher encouraged us to use our imagination.  I did this by using all the colors of the rainbows for everything.  For example, my big mushrooms were pink and purple while my little mushroom seats were yellow, which is my favorite color.  The frog was sitting under a rainbow roof treehouse.  And my animals were all the colors.  It was so much fun!

2. Drama Camp – At drama camp they teach you lots of amazing things.  They will read us a story and we have to think about how we want to act it out and then we have to just do it.  There is no wrong answer or wrong way to represent it.  Then they teach you how to speak with confidence on stage.  Within one week we learned, memorized, and performed a play for our families that we helped put movement and action to.  It’s fun to think about all the different ways you can represent a talking dog.

3. Science Camp – Science is my favorite subject in school.  One of the things I like about science is that you use a lot of the GSD Factor attributes.  Scientists have to be curious or inquisitive and ask lots of questions.  I love asking questions!  Then once you have found a problem that needs to be solved, you need the confidence to dream big, be imaginative to solve that problem.  Sometimes you even need to invent something.  Then you must rely on your resilience to keep trying.  My mom talks about failing fast and failing forward, and if we aren’t failing we aren’t learning.

One of my favorite games to play at home is creative imaginary playtime.  This allows me to create stories with my stuffed animals, giving them names and personalities.  In fact it was because of this imaginary play that I started to dream big about a book for kids talking about the 6 different GSD Factor attributes.  More to come on this topic. Ok bye!
