Pivoting with patience

One of my favorite Friends scenes is the pivot couch moving scene with Ross and Chandler. Pivoting isn’t always fun, but this scene is a great reminder that we can find humor in the moment especially when surrounded by friends.

When we think about pivoting, I want us to consider what it’s like to pivot within patience.

In my book, we talk about being present and trusting the process even when it seems that there are more pivots than plans. Both of these require intentional patience.

Even though the journey may have a lot of starts and stops, successes and failures, you’ll learn quickly. You pause, re-evaluate, pivot, and you relaunch until you are at that successful destination. Sometimes this process is quick, other times it’s not. Either way, it, too, requires intentional patience.

I think that we can all agree that mindset plays a big role in pivoting. The ability and willingness to keep showing up, even if for a moment – it’s the art of starting to do something, anything. With the right mindset, we are able to better ebb and flow with changes and pivots.

Change is inevitable, things around us are always changing. But what if we looked at change not as a negative, but as a positive? Change fosters growth, and with growth, we evolve and transform.

Change and pivots go hand in hand, they provide nuggets that can be gleaned throughout our lives. We must lean in and embrace these lessons and learn how best to incorporate them. We need to have the lens of extending ourselves patience through these changes and pivots.

How quickly we adapt to change and ultimately pivot is like a muscle that must be worked consistently and diligently. Just like getting in shape, you can’t just go to the gym once, you have to show up with consistency, and over time that muscle will develop, allowing you to pivot no matter what life throws at you.
