Truisms and Lessons from Stuart Weitzman

I recently got a chance to hear Stuart Weitzman, American shoe designer, entrepreneur, and founder of the shoe company, Stuart Weitzman, speak at an event.

He shared his key “truisms” that have sustained him throughout his entrepreneurial journey. To hear about those once-in-a-lifetime moments that he held onto and maximized as they related to his brand and telling the story of his product was inspiring.

  1. Risk – he talked about how you have to take risks for those momentum moments. Some risks work, and some don’t, but the important thing is that you confidently take the risk.
  1. Imagination – he talked about the importance of using your imagination to accomplish your goals while also allowing it to lead to fun, success, and relationships. He is a strong believer that nothing is more important than the brand, telling that story, and creating that emotional connection. That’s what’s memorable.
  1. Inspiration – he reminded us to pull inspiration from everywhere. Think and dream big about the people or industry you are going to design for or sell to.
  1. You can’t do it alone – assemble the best team around you that complements each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Be that humble leader who knows when to raise their hand for help.
  1. Solve a problem – this life gives us plenty of problems so be creative in how those problems can be solved. Provide a solution or be part of the solution.
  1. Consistency and Differently – whatever you set out to do, be sure it’s different and be consistent. You don’t want it to be a copy of what’s out there today, so leverage your imagination and inspiration, and don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Doing something differently also ties back to taking that risk.
  1. Perception – as entrepreneurs, we are always evaluating the perception of our brand, product, or service because it impacts our success.
  2. Be part of the community – giving back and paying it forward. There is nothing more rewarding than this, and it will allow you to stay grounded and humble.
